MORE MIXTAPE FUN

Ahh. The fun of a rare mixtape.

Anti-Pop Consortium/Airborn Audio Mixtape

This goodie popped up between Anti-Pop Consortium's end and Airborn Audio's beginning. I've since lost the cover, and can't find record of this release online. 10 tracks, freestyles, intros, etc. It sounds like Priest and Sayyid in their home lab just blasting thru sounds. There's not even a tracklist. Enjoy, I'm sure you won't find this anywhere else.

Space You Ooouuut

||| SA-RA feat. Talib Kweli - "Feel The Bass" |||

Beat-bandit trio SA-RA releases their debut lp, The Hollywood Recordings next week, thus the new video, directed by the guys responsible for "Through The Wire".

To catch up those who aren't familiar, SA-RA aka Sa-Ra Creative Partners is made up of one guy who dresses really weird, one guy with a reputedly extensive jazz background and one guy who made beats for Ice-T, back when Ice Tracy was a bad@ss. Their track record and discography is collectively expansive, working with such cohorts as J Dilla, Dr. Dre, Common, Erykah Badu, Spacek, Black Eyed Peas, N.E.R.D., Heavy D, Mark De Clive-Lowe, Jamiroquai and so on. Oh, and Kanye signed them. A demo cd-r of their material was leaked in 2003 and made its way around the globe with instrumentals and unfinished cuts whose intended uses are understandably hard to determine. What's easy to determine is the stuff is funky.

They've since released a scattering of beat ep's, mixtapes and twelve-inches. So for the uninitated, I present some of my favorite SA-RA tunes. Enjoy:

TGIF

Hello.
Today my face is Jonas.

My code name is Mustard Fingers.
Ask me why and I'll taze you.

Anyhoo, TGIF.
"Thank Goodness It's Friday?"
No, more like, "Thank Goodness It's FREE!"
As we all know by now, DJ Drama got pinched
so a buncha free music has emerged online.
3's the magic number, so here goes:

DJ Raize and Ski Beatz - Beats, Rhymes & Samples

FIrst up, a mixtape chronicling the works of Ski Beatz,
slept-on producer behind many of your favorite joints, including a load of Jay-Z stuff and more notably, in my opinion, the Camp Lo stuff. (those guys are stupendously underrated, but that's another post altogether).
Good mixtape.

Thavius Beck - Give Us Free

One half of the bombastic creature that is Labwaste, formerly (and sometimes) Adlib, formerly of Global Phlowtations, producer who tours w/ Saul Williams and so forth... Thavius Beck. Here's a free ep of his.

Yaggfu Front - Action Packed Adventure

North Carolinian trio Deranged N Damaged, Spin 4th and Jingle Bel crashlanded in walkmans in the mid 90's with this sleeper classic. The rhymes are nice and bugged, but the BEATS! Man.... snippets upon snippets of funk poured into their beat stew. They even flaunt bangin instrumentals just to talk over, it's insane. The guys have a blog [yaggfufront.blogspot.com] and they gave this album away a while back, probably because it's out of print. If you're already up on it, talk a trip down memory lane. If not, download and enjoy.

Out.

oh, and the new SA-RA video is fresh, but more on that later.... one.

In Memory Of..

Pictured: Yusef Afloat (left), Sach (right)

In 1995, LA duo and Project Blowed alum The Nonce arrived with their sleeper classic World Ultimate, an impeccable record full of crisp, airy keys and jazzy, rolling tempos topped by the humbly clever wordplay of Yusef Afloat and Sach (then known as Nouka Basetype). This self-produced effort was followed by a run of locally distributed cassette releases such as Sach's Seven Days To Engineer, so it's safe to assume that Yusef Afloat's Hard Times was intended for release as well.

In 2000, Yusef passed away due to somewhat unknown circumstances. A bit before he returned to the essence, I stumbled on two songs from Hard Times and loved what I heard. This is the ep in full, in all it's analog glory.
Yusef on the beats and Yusef on the rhymes.
Rest In Peace, brother.

HELLO

I am Otherguy.
I am a full-blooded __________r. I come in many guises and personas.
Today, I come to you in the shape of Philip Michael Thomas:

This is Music(k) Mart. We don't sell music. We give it away.
If it's a commercially available work, we provide choice cuts.
If it's out of print, we'll usually give you the whole thing.

It's only right that we begin with a jam by the late, great and inimitable
J Dilla

J DIlla feat. Baatin "Wrathchild"

J Dilla + Baatin equals lava rock. Baatin's always been my favorite mc to grace Dilla's production, his nimble delivery bobbing and weaving through Dilla's funk textures and perfectly fluctuating rhythms. This sounds like a snippet from Dilla's forthcoming Jay Love Japan, and hope springs eternal so let's all keep our fingers crossed.

Georgia Anne Muldrow

Singer/songwriter/producer/musician/fonkateer Georgia Anne Muldrow is an artist in every sense of the word. Her music challenges you to pay full attention, because if you're asleep you'll definitely miss something. She first emerged on tastemakers' lists with demos being traded back and forth on message boards and being played on radio shows like BTS Radio and Giles Peterson Worldwide. Her newest album, Sagala, is available on iTunes, under the ailas Pattie Blingh, so support it. It's the only exciting album on the marketplace right now, so she deserves every cent. Here are some songs from each of her 3 released efforts.

"Andante" *fixed*
"RebelYouthWithSkill" *fixed*
"Feet"
"Boom"
"Lo Mein"

Kids: "YAYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!"

Antipop Consortium "Ghostlawns" (Live)

More later, of course. We'll update this every couple of days, whenever we get something interesting.
Until then, comment as you please and may the funk be with you.

Peace.
