The fun of a rare mixtape.

Anti-Pop Consortium/Airborn Audio Mixtape

This goodie popped up between Anti-Pop Consortium's end and Airborn Audio's beginning. I've since lost the cover, and can't find record of this release online. 10 tracks, freestyles, intros, etc. It sounds like Priest and Sayyid in their home lab just blasting thru sounds. There's not even a tracklist. Enjoy, I'm sure you won't find this anywhere else.Otherguyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12213007699191833650noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7806530998936972189.post-3744314249252812912007-06-27T05:54:00.000-07:002007-06-27T05:59:34.358-07:00free food!recent mixtape, and it sounds like drugs. and it's free.

click the pic

1. facechanger special
2. facechanger lo
3. facechanger murs

the video's bugged too
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6a87vW2uiwOtherguyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12213007699191833650noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7806530998936972189.post-37839807111864930752007-06-20T18:11:00.000-07:002007-06-20T18:39:11.419-07:00Summer Jammies
i woke up.

and once i had my coffee, i realized: it was the 1st day of what earthlings call Summer. Enter: The Queen Latifah Show. It was on this short-lived daytime show that I first saw the man himself sing. His subtlety is what struck me, especially in contrast to Common's hyperactive stage presence. He would nod along, but when the hook came... "AND YOU KNOW!!!!!!! YES YOU KNOW!!!!!!!".. you know the deal. Once the song was done, Latifah walked up to Bilal and said "And you're pretty good! You can sing!" Eyes hidden behind his shades, he mumbled, "Thank you", and looked away. From then on, it was "Okay, who is THIS guy?"

This was during Napster's heyday, so what would end up being the foundation for his debut, 1st Born Second, leaked as mp3s, including "All That I Am", "Second Child" and "Sometimes". "Sometimes" became the most well-known tune in the batch, but my interests were peaked by "Second Child". "Second Child" is creepiness, angst and mania. It lurks towards its listener until it explodes into a cacophony, scoring a tearjerking homocide-involved climax. Bilal plays the aggressor, the victim and eventually the wounded, pleading, "Tell my momma I love her, man". Perhaps the most striking aspect of the tune is the way it dwelled somewhere between dark 70's soul and Bitches Brew effortlessly.

With that said, 1st Born Second arrived and the masses slept. Interscope dropped the ball like the ground had magnets. Which brings us to recent years. Nuggets emerged from time to time, i.e. unreleased stuff, demos, live recordings and so on. As the material circulated, his stage show became the thing of legend. An impeccable craftsman with pristine jazz understandings and 7 languages of opera at his fingertips, Bilal Oliver is a genius of our times.

So, I offer you a folder of choice Bilal material. These are classes in musicianship, lessons in technique, studies in the connectedness of all music. These are the works of an untouchable: Bilal.

||||||||||||||||

Bilal: The Genius
"You're All I Need (Feels Like Heaven)" (unreleased)**
"Get Out Of My Hair" (unreleased) prod. by Mr. Porter**
"Sweet Sour U" w/ Sa-Ra
"Everything In Its Right Place / Sometimes"
(Live @ Radio City Music Hall)
"MILF (Demo)" w/ 88 Keys
"Don't Close Your Eyes" w/ Robert Glasper Trio
"Live At North Sea Jazz Festival 2002"
"Second Child"
"Bring 2"
"High and Dry" w/ Pete Kuzma (Radiohead cover)
"Can't Hide Love" w/ Randy Watson Experience

||||||||||||||||

* sbka = should be known as
** from currently shelved 2nd album A Love For Sale. Their track record and discography is collectively expansive, working with such cohorts as J Dilla, Dr. Dre, Common, Erykah Badu, Spacek, Black Eyed Peas, N.E.R.D., Heavy D, Mark De Clive-Lowe, Jamiroquai and so on. Oh, and Kanye signed them. A demo cd-r of their material was leaked in 2003 and made its way around the globe with instrumentals and unfinished cuts whose intended uses are understandably hard to determine. What's easy to determine is the stuff is funky.

They've since released a scattering of beat ep's, mixtapes and twelve-inches. So for the uninitated, I present some of my favorite SA-RA tunes. Enjoy:

The SA-RA Suite

[xtra linx = 1, 2]
Otherguyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12213007699191833650noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7806530998936972189.post-35358998492335648242007-04-13T09:54:00.000-07:002007-04-15T12:46:24.817-07:00TGIF

Hello.
Today my face is Jonas.

My code name is Mustard Fingers.
Ask me why and I'll taze you.

Anyhoo, TGIF.
"Thank Goodness It's Friday?"
No, more like, "Thank Goodness It's FREE!"
As we all know by now, DJ Drama got pinched
so a buncha free music has emerged online.
3's the magic number, so here goes:

DJ Raize and Ski Beatz - Beats, Rhymes & Samples

FIrst up, a mixtape chronicling the works of Ski Beatz,
slept-on producer behind many of your favorite joints, including a load of Jay-Z stuff and more notably, in my opinion, the Camp Lo stuff. This self-produced effort was followed by a run of locally distributed cassette releases such as Sach's Seven Days To Engineer, so it's safe to assume that Yusef Afloat's Hard Times was intended for release as well.

In 2000, Yusef passed away due to somewhat unknown circumstances.
